# Where do the APC prices come from?

APC prices come from [OpenAlex](https://openalex.org), which records the article processing charge (APC) for each open-access article it indexes. Because the price is recorded per article, the APC report now covers a wide range of publishers rather than only the largest few, and the prices update as OpenAlex updates.

Previously we used static (2020) list prices for the five largest publishers (Elsevier, Wiley, Springer Nature, SAGE, and Taylor & Francis). The report now uses OpenAlex's per-article APC data instead.
